Breathing 101
Breathing is a core skill of singing, and learning to control the breath can take many forms. This exercise essentially trains us to recognise and develop the four stages of the breath. If the steps are too slow for you at the moment, try closing your eyes and listening to the music. 1. Breathe in for four counts 2. Rest on full for four 3. Breathe out for four 4. Rest on empty for four You should not feel at any time that you are holding your breath. This should feel relaxing and reviving, not stressful.

Figure of Eight
This exercise is based on a major scale and serves the same purpose, with the added bonus of being a little more melodic, and closer to what might happen in a real song. The ‘Figure Of Eight’ exercise helps is by - moving our voices over a wider pitch range than we use to speak - developing pitch matching and strength across our whole range - gently stretching the voice, singing notes that are in sequence/ close to each other. General warm up - download the figure of 8 mp3 Sing as much of that as you can without straining. Once you start to strain, please stop.
