Nervous About Singing Lessons?

June 7, 2013

Are you feeling nervous about having singing lessons?Don't be scared of your warm ups

You are not alone. At least 80% of my students have told me that they were very nervous about coming for singing lessons to start with. This ranges from mild self consciousness to high levels of distress and anxiety.

“When I started I wouldn’t have sung infront of my friends and family – now I can’t wait for all the public performances with the choir!” Hayley

Some people have been so anxious before their first session that I couldn’t believe they actually came! If you feel this way, I would like to put your mind at rest that I will do everything I can to help you to feel comfortable. I understand that singing can be a deeply personal activity, and it is only natural to feel apprehensive about trying something new or the first time.

Embrace Your Warms Ups..

Here is some information about the first session that may help put you at ease:-

  • Whatever your level of ability – it is fine! There is no expectation that you should be able to sing anything or to have anything to ‘show’ me.
  • There is no expectation for you to have any singing or musical knowledge or experience at all.
  • One-to-one sessions are called ‘Personal Coaching’ that rather than ‘private lessons’ because I don’t ‘teach’ all the time. We go on the journey to improving your singing together, side by side, rather than ‘me teacher – you student’. I will of course explain new information to you as necessary and appropriate to you personally.
  • A ‘trial session’ or ‘assessment session’ goes both ways – it is for you to see if you like my coaching style, and to see if you feel comfortable with me. I then assess your level so that I know how coach you appropriately.
