Playing On The Plaza
Hayling Island’s beautiful bandstand at Eastoke Corner is going to be adorned with local musicians this summer due to the brand new music committee for Playing on The Plaza. In their own time, local members of the community, Roy Chudobskyi of Nevada Music, Simon Pykett, Head of Music at Purbrook School, and Dielle Hannah, Director of Igloo Music UK have joined locals Hayling Islanders who instigated Playing On The Plaza in 2007.
“We want to provide great opportunities for our local musicians of all ages, who otherwise might not get the chance to perform at festivals like this, so they might gain some experience” says Roy Chudobskyi, manager at Nevada Music and local resident of Hayling Island. “We have a great facility here on Eastoke Corner, and together with help from other local organisations we now have a great team to put on these events for our local community.”
Nevada Music provides all the necessary equipment, Simon Pykett facilitates the inclusion of young performers and local schools, and Igloo Music brings events management and involvement of local music groups for adults, all free of charge.
“We had a great first event on 23rd June, and have enjoyed working together – long may it continue” says Simon Pykett of Purbrook School.
The team have put together seven events on Sunday afternoons from June to September, including performances from students of Purbrook School, the Hayling Island Ukulele Club and other community groups for adults, as well as an array of fledgling bands and solo artists from Hayling, Portsmouth and Southampton.
The next event is on Sunday 14th July as part of ‘Our Big Gig’ a national celebration of community music. This will take place at the bandstand on Eastoke Corner, Hayling Island, between 1pm and 5pm.
