The 4 Levels of Awareness
August 4, 2015Learning to do anything new can be a daunting process. As we get older we grow out of the learning cycle as we generally know everything we need to know to get us through our daily lives. We may acquire new facts or figures, learn a new computer program or mobile phone but these are just updates on a skill we already have. As children, we are used to learning, not only at school but virtually every day we learn something new. That’s how life is.
When we choose to learn a musical instrument, we are taking on several challenges at once. The physical mechanics of getting a sound from the instrument (I’m including the voice as an instrument) and also the many theoretical aspects of the instrument such as where the notes are, what they are called and how they fit together. This is no mean feat and takes many hours of practice and study and those hours never really come to an end. Many professional musicians still take lessons just as most (if not all) sportsmen still undergo training. There never comes a time when we can say we “know it all” as there is always something else to learn.
One of my favourite teachers is a US bass player called Anthony Wellington. Anthony has many wonderful theories on music education as a whole and I have included one for you here….
