The bass guitar is sometimes seen as just a lower guitar, barely audible and possibly a redundant instrument. But the bass can be so much more than that and by following these tips, your bass playing will improve and become much more noticeable and unique.
Hold the rhythm down as well as develop your own style
-A bassist’s job is to lock in with the drums as well as making the rhythm of a song sound “thicker”. This is still a fundamental point of the bass as it is still the glue that holds everything together.
-But you should also be prepared to fill or change something up by taking a lead role in part of the song, to captivate the listener, by adding memorable hooks, as well as to show your musical ability. Remember the bass isn’t just a lower guitar.
You don’t have to play or sound like a traditional bass player
-There have been many bassists who don’t play bass “traditionally” but have still achieved remarkable and iconic sounds.
In the genre of metal for example, these players have arguably diverted from the norm. In the genre of metal for example, these players have arguably diverted from the norm.
-Korn’s “Fieldy” has achieved an iconic bass tone by incorporating slap bass technique, as well as his signature percussive sound, which really cuts through the mix and makes him stand out.
-Former Metallica Bassist Cliff Burton would use many effect pedals such as Wah and fuzz to create a tight lead sound, which he would use to fill and even solo occasionally.
Most importantly, find a technique or sound that is unique to you and your style of playing, as well as one which compliments the song and the overall band.
