UK Garage Legend Invites Budding Producers into Ibiza Studio..
August 10, 2015“Re-Re-Wind.. and the crowd say….?”
15 years ago, there were few people who didn’t know that the answer is “Bo SeLEcta!!!!”. Craig David, originally from Southampton, had been working with Mark Hill (AKA Artful) since the tender age of 15. A young prodigy, MCing at local Southampton clubs, Craig had caught Mark’s attention and they started working together at Mark’s studio, developing a revolutionary new style of singing with Pete Devereux, the other half of Artful Dodger. Taking the percussive delivery style of the MC and the melody of R&B, between them they created UK Garage.
A whole new genre of music was born…
One of the greatest developments of our time in popular music, UK Garage, pioneered by the Artful Dodger duo, has influenced the evolution of countless artists from then until today. Many of today’s successful recording artists, such as Rudimental and Disclosure, cite the original work of Artful Dodger as a huge influence on them in their formative years.
Craig David’s album, ‘Born To Do It’, produced by Mark Hill, was a worldwide sensation, and has now become a classic album having sold 14million copies globally to date; Mark Hill received two Ivor Novello Awards for this, and two more for his work on “It’s All About The Stragglers” album for the hits ‘Rewind’ and ‘Woman Trouble’. Over the years, the creative team moved on and the record label kept the name ‘Artful Dodger’; new artists now perform the Artful Dodger tracks, and still enjoy a healthy touring schedule performing for the millions that want to hear these classic songs, written in that Southampton studio all those years ago by Mark, Pete and Craig.
The Original Artful Dodger – Now Simply ‘Artful’
Mark Hill now goes by the name ‘Artful’, is now a chair for the Ivor Novello Awards, and is still releasing fantastic music with a variety of A-List artists such as Eliza Doolittle and MNEK.
With the view to inspire the next generation of producers, Mark is delivering a series of masterclasses and events, inviting people to take advantage of learning from and networking with him directly in the studio environment.
This October, Artful is running a 3 day event on the iconic isle of Ibiza, offering budding producers the opportunity to learn directly from him, get feedback on their own work, socialise with Artful and his team at the legendary Café Mambo and other favourite spots of Mark’s on the island.
This is a life changing opportunity for young people wishing to learn from one of the industry’s most influential producers.
